Freedom Writers Building a Self Hosted WordPress Blog

Following up my last post How To Install a Self Hosted WordPress Blog, I’ve had requests to build upon that information and go through the steps to install WordPress themes and also WordPress plugins, so that’s what this post will be about here in this Freedom Writer’s blog.

Once you have your self hosted WordPress blog installed and have made your first post, you’ll probably be wanting to make it look a whole lot prettier than the standard theme allows.

No problem!

WordPress give you a great directory of user-created themes for you to browse through . For themes here’s the link for the WP library:

http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/

There’s a lot in there, so you’d better make yourself comfortable!

With these WordPress themes, once you’ve found the one you like, download the file to your computer and unzip it. Then upload (via FTP) the unzipped folder to your blog’s wp-content/themes folder.

Next, log into your WordPress user panel and click on the Presentation tab. You’ll see the new theme you just uploaded as a graphic on that page – simply click on the graphic of your new theme and that one becomes the current theme. You can check by refreshing your blog in your browser – you’ll see your blog with its nice new WordPress theme!

Your post stays intact, of course, but anything else you added like banners or adsense, you’ll have to copy and paste into your new WordPress theme’s files and you do that through the Theme Editor facility – click on the Theme Editor tab from the Presentations page within your WordPress panel.

There are actually two routes you can go through to edit your WordPress theme – by simply dragging widgets around and placing them in your sidebar (using the Widgets tab), or via HTML in the Theme Editor where you edit the actual files.

Do take care with this as once you hit the update button, you can’t go back and undo your changes.

WordPress Plug-Ins

WordPress Plugins are another story… There are a ton of them and you probably won’t need more than a handful – I’ve seen blogs with so many visual WordPress plugins loaded that they look like a carnival and take ages to load up, so you need to exercise a little restraint there! They’re as easy to add on as WordPress themes as again you simply download, unzip and upload to your blog via FTP. Here’s the link for the WordPress plugins directory:

http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/

Once you’ve uploaded them to your wp-content/plugins folder, you go back into your WordPress panel, click on the Plugins tab and from there you can activate them.

Which WordPress plugins do I need?

Well for freedom writers, that is mainly personal choice, but if you’re going to have a well SEO’d blog with a fairly minimal look, you should exercise restraint in the amount of WordPress plugins you use. Some you’ll have to scout around to find, but there is an excellent list of them over at Vic’s Blogger Unleased blog in this post: WordPress Plugin List

As you’ll see there are plenty to choose from. I’m only currently using one or two here at this freedom writers blog but will add more as time goes by.

That’s it for now – I’ll post more on this freedom writers subject when I think of more stuff!

Freedom Writers Domains to Make Money

Freedom writers domains to make money is another strange title, but a necessary one if I’m going to convince those nice people at Google that this blog is being written by a freedom writers and his posts are in some way involved in the world of the freedom writers! Well, it’s a start, anyway! After my last post, Heath Ledger Not Really dead, a silly spoof designed to attract a lot of traffic, which I have to say worked quite well, I’d like to get into the side of domains and how you can use them to make money online.

Domains and the make money niche are what I really want to hark on about today, or more precisely expired domains and the buying thereof. I’ve not been as busy as I was in the beginning of my new obsession with second-hand domain buying mainly because my current freedom writer’s writing gig is keeping me too busy to really get stuck into them and as a result I haven’t bought any for a while.

But I will be again soon!

As for the ones I have bought, I’m a bit stuck as to what to do with them all! Well, not exactly stuck, as I’ve put wordpress blogs on them all to get them into a live state so that Google doesn’t think they’ve been neglected. But I’m so short on time, I simply haven’t been able to fill them all up with the freedom writers content they so desperately need to re-enter their niches and compete for the top pages in the SERPs as well as start to make money for me.

Which was the whole reason for buying them in the first place!

One site has been getting more than its fair share of the content, mainly because I know a good deal about it’s niche and can rattle off plenty of long posts and get it some keyword authority – I’m talking about my Make Money Hints blog which I shall endow with the anchor text: make money fast.

That should give it a bit of a freedom writers leg up and with all its new fresh content should help it to start to do what it’s domain was bought to do and that’s to make money!

Other domains in other niches require a fair bit of research on my part, which is tough as I don’t have that much tome to spare on them, which is why I’ve been contemplating a slightly different idea for them.

Vic at Blogger Unleashed has got me thinking along the lines of using BANS to set and forget the domains that I really haven’t got time to do much with for now, but I have also been thinking about using the already set up wordpress blogs on those sites and maybe writing some simple scripts to use the BANS idea on them without going the whole way with setting up BANS on them. Its all a case of freedom writers time constraints and what I can and can’t do with it. My train of thought seems to be leading me to think it will take me time to learn how to use BANS, whereas I already know how to use the little known eBay affiliate program to earn commission from putting people onto products on eBay’s list.

I was doing that several months ago using craigslist to promote this and it worked to a point where I was making some commissions from CJ but not enough to warrant the work I was putting in. Now BANS uses the same idea just they have site templates and scripts that do all that work for you.

So what is there to think about? Just get BANS and get on with it!

Well… I’m a freedom writers and a tinkerer by trade – I love to mess with things and see what I can do with what I’ve got which is probably why I’ve never got time for anything… Ha! I just fancy trying out this little theory of mine and seeing what happens first. Ok, if it flops, then I just get BAN, kick myself in the pants for wasting time and get on with it.

But if it works, then I’ve accomplished something and I like to accomplish things by going against the grain – a character defect I’m sure must irritate the hell out of people that know me! Some call it stubbornness! Some call it plain pig-headedness, but what the hell.

At least when I’m wrong, I admit it, learn from it, pick myself up, dust myself off and carry on!

So it’s just a bit of experimental fun for me to try this out and see where it goes and all I lose is a little time (ok and probably a little money) but if I don’t do it, then I’ll look back on my life and I’ll always wonder… why didn’t I try that little experiment with that domain when I thought of it?

I ‘ll pick a niche, a domain and a product and then set it up and see. Then I’ll report back here in, say a month to see what it did…

I like a good conundrum…

Freedom Writers Booster

Freedom Writers Terry Didcott has a nice ring to it and I think I’ll keep this newly adopted moniker as it not only gives me a much more interesting handle, it also gives this site a better chance of appearing somewhere decent in the search engine pages for a keyword that is actually searched for in freedom writers.

So as for this post, which trails on nicely from my last one entitled Freedom Writers Writes, where I posed a nice thought provoking question right at the end. Well, I bet you’re dying to know what my own answer to that would be.

Well, I have to admit I gave it some thought, because you have to remember that I am now doing what I’ve always wanted to do, or more correctly am currently enjoying what I do to make money by freedom writers writing for a living. So by posing the question I was really pushing out my own train of thought in that not only am I doing exactly what I enjoy doing but I’ve been actively working on an offer I recently accepted which is doing more of what I’m already doing.

That’s writing!

So as for being a freedom writers, the commission I have taken on does restrict me somewhat in that there is a lot of work to be done in a fairly concentrated timespan, but as it’s merely more of what I already do, then for me it is perfect in that the extra money allows me to continue working at this as a full time occupation instead as only part-time and relying on odd jobs to keep my less than healthy finances afloat!

So my answer to the question is actually “C”. Although being a happy freedom writers I can’t see myself dropping dead any time soon I’m also under no illusions about the fact that any online commission can and will end at some point depending upon the nature of the freedom writers commission.

So the same thought process should be going on inside the heads of anyone who has a mind to attempt to make a full-time career out of the Internet. If someone offers you a fair price for your work even though it means a hefty workload in the short-term with a possibility of future work coming as an off-shoot of it, then you should never reject it (unless they are taking the piss with the money). In fact you should grab it with both hands, because if it doesn’t last too long, then you are at least able to boost your bank account in the short term while you nurture your freedom writers Internet Marketing business. If it does last a while, then you are even better off by being financially secure for the medium term at least – and you can still schedule the extra time to work on your IM business in the meantime.

So this freedom writers should stop this now and get back to working on the stuff that is making money to boost the bank balance!

When things are going well, doesn’t it just put a great big smile on your face?
